Video challenges with phones
Let a team challenge a line call or a net touch the way they do at international events, using phones volunteers already have. The phones film the court, the scoring table watches the replay and decides, and the referee can walk over to see it.
How clubs do this today
Outside international competitions there is no video review. A ball on the line or a hand on the net is whatever the referee saw from where they stood, and one close call can decide a set.
The systems professional leagues use run a dozen or more fixed high-speed cameras with their own operators — nothing a club or a one-day tournament can bring into a sports hall.
What we are building
- Phones on tripods at the net posts and the corners, each keeping only the last minute of video, joined to a match by scanning a code at the scoring table.
- A challenge for the team that lost the rally, with the FIVB limits on how many and how quickly, or looser rules for friendly games.
- Replays from the phones that can see the call, frame by frame and in slow motion, decided at the scoring table and shown to the referee there.
- Nothing kept afterwards: the few seconds sent for a challenge are deleted as soon as it is decided.
